On October 2, 2015, the Leadership Kitsap Class of 2015 spent the day at White Horse Golf Course, located in Kingston. Port Madison Enterprises and White Horse Golf Course provided the room, breakfast, lunch, and snacks for the class in their beautiful facility. Town & Country Markets sponsored the event.
Class members discussed the book Strengths Based Leadership by Tom Rath and Barry Concie. Based on their discoveries, the book identifies three keys to being a more effective leader: knowing your strengths and investing in others’ strengths, getting people with the right strengths on your team, and understanding and meeting the basic needs of those who look to you for leadership. Prior to the Challenge Day, class members took the Strengths Finders 2.0 assessment and identified their top five strengths. The morning included debriefing the assessment results with their current service project teams. Dr. Nick Wyatt (LK13), LK Board member, facilitated the debrief, and led a discussion on self-awareness and self-assurance.
Before lunch, a panel of local leaders discussed how they lead their organizations and their perspectives on leadership. The panel included: Anthony George, President and COO of Kitsap Bank; Lori Maxim, VP Sound Publishing West Sound Operations; Kol Medina, Executive Director Kitsap Community Foundation; and Chris Rieland, President and
After lunch, Kol Medina shared his view of servant leadership through his meaningful personal journey. Board member, Dr. Dora Summers-Ewing (LK12), wrapped up the day by introducing Kouzes and Posner’s The Leadership Challenge. The leadership concepts learned from Dr. Summers-Ewing’s presentation added to the tools necessary to increase leadership credibility and personal growth.
