Dr. Turner engaging the class in Kitsap’s Health Outcomes

Leadership Kitsap’s Healthy Community Day was held at Harrison Medical Center, Silverdale, on January 6, 2017. David Schultz, CHI Franciscan Health Market President, Peninsula Region welcomed the class and gave an update on Harrison Medical Center’s new Silverdale campus.

Kody Russell explaining ACES

Kody Russell, Kitsap Strong Project Director shared Kitsap Strong’s collaborative impact initiative to improve the overall health and well-being of Kitsap and its residents through the prevention of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and building of resilience, a theme woven throughout the day.

Kitsap County Public Health District Health Officer, Dr. Susan Turner, gave an eye-opening report of the current, critical health issues in Kitsap County. One participant shared, “I was surprised by some of the negative trends (especially the depression/thoughts of suicide), but not surprised at the disparity of outcomes across income levels.” “Dr. Turner’s presentation broadened my perspective on Kitsap County’s health status. I had no idea how Kitsap was doing.”

Round Table Exercise: Challenges In Our Community

Class members participated in round table discussions of challenges in our community hosted by several local agencies: Cancer & Wellness: Harmony Hill Healing Retreat, Children Birth to Five: Holly Ridge Center, Health Care for the Underserved: Peninsula Community Health Services, Kitsap’s Homeless: Continuum of Care/Homeless Coalition, Mental Health: Kitsap Mental Health Services, Senior Information and Assistance: Kitsap County Division of Aging & Long Term Care, Teen Homelessness: Coffee Oasis, Teen Suicide: Crisis Clinic of the Peninsulas, Volunteer Opportunities: United Way Volunteer Center. Connie Merrill (LK03) debriefed the exercise.

Lunch provided by Harrison Medical Center catering provided the opportunity for reflective conversation. Following lunch, Tom Jacobs (LK12) led a group discussion about the Positive Leadership capacity of Resilience. Resilience can apply to a person’s ability to recover from, or adjust to, misfortune or change. Small groups discussed in detail their experience with leadership and resilience.

Case Study Exercises with Community Agencies

The rest of the afternoon revolved around an activity that ultimately broadened the class members’ knowledge of the various key health care and social service agencies available in Kitsap County. Class members were given case studies reflecting real scenarios in Kitsap County and had to visit the various agency representatives to find possible solutions.

The participating agencies included: Crisis Clinic of the Peninsulas, Holly Ridge Center, Housing Solutions of Kitsap County, Kitsap Community Resources, Kitsap Public Health District, Meals on Wheels Kitsap, Multicare Home Health & Hospice, Peninsula Community Health Services, Stand Up for Kids, and the Suquamish Tribe. The activity was debriefed by Marie Singleton (LK09).

What an impactful day of learning about Kitsap’s collaborative efforts to keep our community healthy!
