State Government Day was held February 9, 2018 in Olympia. The class had an inspiring trip to our state capitol where they had up close and personal discussions with members of the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches and enjoyed behind the scenes tours. One participant commented, “You forget that Government officials are just regular people like you and I. Seeing the ‘human’ side of them made me understand their jobs better.”
The Class of 2018 began their day at the Washington State Department of Transportation where they received a summary of the challenges of state transportation from Keith Metcalf, Deputy Secretary of Transportation.
The morning also included a visit to the Insurance Commissioner’s Office where Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler shared an overview of the department and current legislative priorities. The class then had the opportunity to explore the State Capitol and surrounding campus.
It was a busy day for legislators in Olympia. We were honored to have State Senator Tim Sheldon (35th District) join the class for lunch. The Senator explored a variety of topics regarding state issues affecting Kitsap County. Representative Drew MacEwen’s Legislative Assistant Pam Shaffer (35th District) shared an interesting insider’s view of her position as a long-time legislative assistant with a rich family history in Washington State politics.
An inspirational part of the day was meeting with Lieutenant Governor Cyrus Habib in the Senate Rules Room. The Lt. Governor shared his personal story and slate of issues including Veteran and Disability Employment, Access to Higher Education, and Creating a College-Going Culture. A three-time cancer survivor, Lieutenant Governor Habib has been fully blind since age eight.
Another highlight was a tour of the Temple of Justice, led by Chief Justice Mary Fairhurst. Justice Fairhurst gave a historical tutorial of the judicial system in Washington State as well as a personal and inspirational call to lead.
