Leadership Kitsap’s State Government Day was held February 10, 2017 in Olympia. Despite the sideways wind and rain, the class had an inspiring trip to our state capitol where they learned about the leadership journeys of executives and staff, enjoyed behind the scenes tours, and up close and personal discussions with Kitsap’s legislative delegation. One participant commented, ” I just wasn’t very aware of the direct relationship between our town and the state – it’s actually very close.”
The Class of 2017 began their day at the Washington State Department of Transportation, where they received a summary of the challenges of state transportation from Keith Metcalf, Deputy Secretary of Transportation. The morning also included a visit to the Insurance Commissioner’s Office where Deputy Insurance Commissioner for Policy and Legislative Affairs AnnaLisa Gellerman shared an overview of the department and her personal leadership story. Next the class met with David Westbrook, Governor Inslee’s Director of Outreach to discuss the Governor’s session priorities and proposed budget.
The class was joined for lunch with State Senator Christine Rolfes and State Representatives Sherry Appleton and Drew Hansen from the 23rd District, and Drew MacEwen’s Legislative Assistant Pam Kentner from the 35th District. Ms. Kentner gave the class an interesting insider’s view of her position as a long-time legislative assistant with a rich family history in Washington State politics. The leaders explored a variety of challenges and opportunities regarding state issues affecting Kitsap County, especially the current challenge to fully fund education. After the lunch, the class had the opportunity to explore the State Capitol and surrounding campus.
A highlight of the day was a tour of the Temple of Justice, led by Chief Justice Mary Fairhurst. Justice Fairhurst gave a historical tutorial of the judicial system in Washington State as well as a personal and inspirational call to lead.
